New York’s largest community arts school opens its doors to the public for its fourth annual Discovery Day. At this FREE event, children ages four and up can try out a wide range of instruments under the guidance of Lucy Moses School’s dedicated and experienced faculty members. This is a great opportunity for beginners as well as young music students thinking about starting a second instrument to see what it’s like to play the violin, guitar, cello, flute, clarinet, recorder, saxophone, oboe, bassoon and trumpet. Throughout the event, families can step into Kaufman Center’s Merkin Concert Hall to enjoy short performances by talented young Lucy Moses School students. Snacks will be available. Find out more about private lessons.
In addition to exploring musical instruments, children(ages 4-6) and their caregivers can participate in a sample 20-minute Dalcroze Eurhythmics class in which they’ll explore musical concepts through active rhythm games, creative movement, songs and stories. Space is limited: To guarantee a spot in a Dalcroze sample class, families should call 212 501 3360.
At 6:30 pm, Kaufman Center’s critically-acclaimed teen new music ensemble Face the Music will perform works by Steve Martland and Lev Zhurbin as well as Philip Glass’s Glassworks outside on W. 67th Street as part of the city-wide Make Music New York festival.
