Congratulations to Lucy Moses School flute faculty member Mary Barto, who has been named a quarterfinalist for the Music Educator Award presented by the GRAMMY Foundation and the Recording Academy. The award recognizes educators who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools. 222 music teachers were selected as quarterfinalists from more than 7,000 nominations submitted from all 50 states. The semifinalists will be announced in September 2014.
The Chamber Music Coordinator for Lucy Moses School’s Adult Division for over 10 years, Mary is a former member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and has performed in New York with the New York Philharmonic, New York City Opera, New York City Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre. She is a member of the New York Five, exclusively performing music composed by their pianist, George Quincy, and recording on Albany Records. In addition to LMS, Mary teaches flute at Columbia University’s Teachers College, Fordham University, Hunter College and Mannes College – the New School for Music, where she was awarded the Distinguished University Teaching Award. She is the Director of the Mannes College Extension Division and Preparatory Division Flute Ensembles.
