What Du Yun's Pulitzer Win Means for Women in Classical Music

The New Yorker, William Robin, 4/14/17
Today there are women in the industry working to insure that the next generation has a different experience... In another effort, four composers—including Missy Mazzoli, whose opera “Breaking the Waves” was widely seen as a strong Pulitzer candidate—have launched the Luna Composition Lab, a mentoring program for young women.

Mazzoli is doing her part of leveling the playing field. In collaboration with Kaufman Music Center, she and composer Ellen Reid co-founded the Luna Composition Lab, which aims to “close the gender gap in the world of music composition by providing mentorship and opportunities for young female composers,” generally high school-aged. Participants receive one-on-one mentorship and lessons, performance opportunities, high-quality recordings of their work, and access to a network of performers and fellow composers. Mazzoli is working with girls as young as 14 who aspire to be composers.

Missy Mazzoli is one example of an artist who is helping young women find their voice. Working in collaboration with Kaufman Music Center’s youth orchestra, Face the Music, Mazzoli, along with acclaimed composers Ellen Reid, Reena Esmail and Kristin Kuster, launched a program called Luna Composition Lab. Luna Lab aims to address the gender imbalance head-on by creating role models, mentorship and performance opportunities for girls, along with providing access to a professional network of musicians. By connecting young women with established female composers, the program is starting to close the gap -- providing girls with positive role models, fostering their confidence, giving them an outlet for self-expression and encouraging them to follow their dreams.

To Help Women in Opera, Several Institutions Arise

A lab to close the gender gap
“When you’re young is when you receive the brunt of this sexist behavior,” Ms. Mazzoli said recently. “You don’t have the defenses or the perspective to deal with it at such a young age, which is why I think a lot of women are discouraged from being composers when they’re teenagers. Because what self-respecting woman would enter a field where she doesn’t feel respected?”

As a solution, Ms. Mazzoli and three other composers — in collaboration with the Kaufman Music Center’s Face the Music youth orchestra — began the Luna Composition Lab. The lab is designed as a mentorship program to facilitate relationships between young women composers and more established figures. “Having even just one woman like that in your life can be a game changer for lots of young women,” Ms. Mazzoli said. The lab — which will include composition lessons, performance and recording opportunities, and access to a professional network of musicians — recently announced its first three fellows for 2016–17.

Among composers, women are still in the minority. To address the issue, in 2016 composers Missy Mazzoli and Ellen Reid launched the Luna Composition Lab, There are other opportunities for women composers on the cusp of the profession, but Luna is designed for the young -- eighth graders through rising college freshmen.
