There was a lot to celebrate at Kaufman Music Center this year! Our 2014 Gala held on May 29 at The Edison Ballroom was truly inspiring, with extraordinary performances by violinist Robert McDuffie and violist Hsin-Yun Huang as well as the immensely talented KMC students Alice Ivy-Pemberton, Sophia Shao, Nadira Novruzov, Yali Levy-Schwartz, Face the Music’s Pannonia Quartet (Sophia Steger, Emma Ike, Javen Lara and Nick Burkel) and Fyodor Shiryaev. Each year more than 200 young students have the opportunity to study at Lucy Moses School because of scholarships supported by generous donors. The 2014 Scholarship Luncheon held on March 11 honored Phyllis Feder, Vice President of Kaufman Music Center's Board of Trustees and Chairman of the LMS Advisory Board, for her dedication to music education and her tireless efforts on behalf of the school. The 2015 Luncheon will honor an extraordinary educator and acclaimed performer: Roni Ben-Hur, Director of LMS’s Jazz Program.
Did you know that Special Music School’s music program – $7500 per student per year – is funded entirely by private donations? SMS Musical Evenings, cocktail receptions followed by intimate performances by world-renowned performers in beautiful private homes, help keep the music playing. This year guests were invited to violinist Joshua Bell’s home for a very special private performance; other artists this season were cellist Adrian Daurov, pianist Jonathan Biss and, of course, our extremely talented SMS students.
And finally, be warned: KMC’s annual Theater Wing Party tends to get rowdy! The 2014 party featured Martin Charnin, celebrated lyricist, writer, director and creative genius behind the original score for Annie. Held at an exquisite Upper West Side home, the event also included a performance by Nine star Shelley Burch.
