Jack Gibbons, piano

In celebration of the bicentenary of Charles-Valentin Alkan, Chopin's reclusive contemporary, Jack Gibbons, "an Alkan interpreter of exceptional authority" (Gramophone), gives the first complete US performance of Alkan’s legendary Twelve Studies in the Minor Keys, Op.39. This extraordinary collection, the composer’s "magnum opus," contains some of the most spectacular piano music of the 19th century including an impassioned Symphony, a monumental Concerto, a dazzling set of variations based on Aesop’s fables, and many other inspired masterpieces, all of which make extreme demands on the technique and stamina of the performer. "This ranks among the most exhilarating feats of pianism I've heard" (Gramophone).
