Academic Program

Special Music School High School provides talented young musicians with the opportunity to pursue serious music studies along with a rigorous Regents-based academic curriculum all during the regular school day.  A comprehensive college-preparatory program is provided with numerous advanced placement (AP) offerings. Spanish is offered as a foreign language.

Our high school admits only 50 students per grade for a total enrollment of 200 students. This enables Special Music School High School to provide a small and individually focused learning environment for each and every student.

  • Students major in Instrumental Music, Voice or Composition; Two-year sequence in music technology
  • Participation in collaborative ensembles and solo and ensemble performing opportunities
  • Interaction with professional musicians and composers through residencies
  • Graduating seniors create collaborative interdisciplinary projects to present in the community

Special Music School is New York City's only K-12 school that teaches music as a core subject. Its first graduating class of 12th graders in June 2017 is celebrating a 100% graduation and college acceptance rate. Click here to see a college list.
