Open to advanced performers aged 15-18
This new pre-professional ensemble under the umbrella of Face the Music is a collective of six talented and driven NYC high school-aged players who are ready to dig into what it means to be a 21st century performer. The ensemble will be dedicated to exploring and performing exciting and challenging music by some of today’s most creative and groundbreaking (living) composers, and members will hone their ears and their chamber music and improvisation skills. This is a conductorless ensemble, and the students will learn how to function as a unit and make group musical decisions together like professionals.

The Advanced Performance Practice Ensemble will have a number of performance opportunities at professional level venues throughout the season, as well as guest coachings with top level professional performers and composers.

Through a one-of-a-kind collaboration with the New York University composition department, the ensemble will collaborate with college and graduate-level composition students on a premieres concert in the spring, allowing them the unique opportunity to experience the collaborative process of commissioning and premiering new work by living composers.

The ensemble instrumentation is: one percussionist (proficiency in mallet instruments, other percussion and some drum set skills required), one bassist (ideally with doubling skills on electric bass, although this is not absolutely required), one cellist, one electric guitarist, one pianist and one clarinetist (ideally with doubling skills on bass clarinet and/or saxophones). Applicants will be asked to submit a prescreening tape, and finalists will be asked to play a live audition.
