On October 23, the renowned violinist Joshua Bell, one of the most celebrated violinists of his era, joined the acclaimed pianist Alessio Bax for a performance in Merkin Hall benefiting the music education program at Kaufman Music Center's Special Music School (SMS). The only K-12 public school in the U.S. that teaches music as a core subject, SMS is a unique public/private partnership between the NYC Department of Education and Kaufman Music Center, which provides the extensive music program at no cost to the school's students and families.

Three outstanding young SMS violinists – Rebecca Beato (8th grade, student of Viktor Basis), Ana Isabella España (8th grade, student of Lynelle Smith; pictured above) and Julia Jones (SMS alumna, student of Viktor Basis) – joined Mr. Bell on stage for performances of movements from Bach's Concerto in D minor for Two Violins. Mr. Bell, an SMS parent, and Mr. Bax performed works by Franck, Schubert, Wieniawski and Chopin. The audience at this sold-out performance included 200 SMS students as well as several hundred generous supporters of the school.
