“Come here and see how happy people are, and how invigorated students are by the community and opportunities to showcase and broadcast their work. Programs like Cover Me, choir, and orchestra - and all these different things acting in unison together - is so beautiful to watch. I think it’s cool.”  – Kevin

Kevin, age 15, is a sophomore majoring in vocal performance at Kaufman Music Center's Special Music School High School. Each morning, he commutes to Special Music School from Gravesend, Brooklyn where he lives with his mother and younger brother.

Special Music School has helped Kevin find his voice as both a singer and writer. During his freshman year, Kevin helped launch Euphonium, SMS’s first-ever literary magazine. Working with his mentor, English teacher Noah Gordon, Kevin has written and fostered conversations about racial literacy. He will have the opportunity to give a lecture on his work at Columbia University this year! Kevin credits the diverse community at SMS for fostering important, inclusive conversations about race and art, and he hopes to continue this work as an English major in college. With your support, we know Kevin will achieve his dreams and make a different in the world.
