Luis Diaz began playing recorder as a 4th grader at his elementary school in Washington Heights. He showed a natural talent as a wind player, and soon won a scholarship to study the flute with Valerie Holmes at Kaufman Music Center. He was ultimately admitted into the Center’s Special Music School.
Luis says: “There’s no way my parents would have been able to allow me to do what it is that I love had it not been for the generosity of Kaufman Music Center. There’s absolutely no way.”
After Special Music School, Luis attended Frank Sinatra High School of the Arts – but he stayed connected to Kaufman Music Center, taking private lessons, participating in masterclasses by world renowned musicians (including Sir James Galway, pictured below), and playing in Kaufman's youth new music ensemble Face the Music. Luis attended Nyack College as a flute major, and then enrolled in the Master’s program at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music.
Kaufman Music Center has set Luis on a lifelong path as a musician, providing generous music scholarships – without which musical training would have been out of reach.
