MUSICAL STOREFRONTS
January 21-April 28, 2021
Kaufman Music Center brought live music back to NYC’s Upper West Side with a pop-up concert series with 107 performances featuring 202 of our city’s finest performers, including chamber musicians, soloists, Broadway stars from Hamilton, Tootsie and Company, and artists from the Merkin Hall stage. More than 30K passers-by enjoyed the performances. Presented in partnership with the Alphadyne Foundation, Musical Storefronts provided work to artists severely impacted by the cancellation of live performances in a format that took into account all necessary health and safety measures for both artists and audiences.
Special thanks to Jay Dweck, Milstein Properties, Steinway & Sons, the Lincoln Square Business Improvement District and Breads Bakery.

Accordionist Felipe Hostins has been thrilling audiences for over fifteen years with his ‘soulful’ and ‘groovy’ playing. He began music studies at the age of three with his paternal grandfather, Valmor Hostins. He later joined the School of Music Amormega (Middle Garcia Neighborhood Association), in his hometown of Blumenau, Santa Catarina (SC) where he studied music theory of the accordion for 4 years. After the death of his grandfather in July 2004, Hostins spent a year away from studies and his instrument. He returned in 2005 at the invitation to join the Brazilian alternative rock band called La Belle Excuse, recording an album of the same name. 2005 also brought about the creation of a new project-forró (traditional Brazilian music that originated in the northeast of the country); in collaboration with the percussionist Leco Santos and singer/composer Pochyua Andrade.
Hostins has toured and recorded in Brazil with some of the greats-Paraná (Chico Rey & Paraná), João Lucas e Marcelo, Téo & Edu, Marciano (João Mineiro e Marciano), Padre Fábio de Melo, Guilherme e Santiago, to name a few. It was only in 2015 that Hostins moved to the US; and thus began his international career. His collaborations in the US include numerous projects with artists such as Forró in the Dark, Richard Bona, Davi Vieira, Lucy Alves, Jorge Drexler, Kevin Johansen, Cyro Baptista, Gustavo Di Dalva, Lorenzo Jovanotti, Flávia Bittencourt, among others.
Not only a performing artist, Hostins is a natural composer and currently finishing his first original album, Origins, with collaborations of artists around the globe. He co-created the musical style Forrópera with mezzo-soprano, Chrystal E. Williams. Forrópera is a musical space created as way to foster unity, peace and understanding through music. Presented as a co-collaboration with Astral Artists’, Inc. and the Esperanza Arts Center, their Forrópera Experiência is set to premiere 7 May 2021. Hostins’ composition, Meu Brasil de Cristal (Chrystal), written for the mezzo as part of Astral Artists, Inc.’s micro-commissioning program, had both its North American and South American premieres in 2018. Together with Williams, Hostins has been an artist in residence for city schools and collaborated on numerous concerts/recitals with Astral Artists’, Inc., Baltimore Concert Opera, and Opera Delaware.
Hostins is part of the Gadji Accordion Team (www.gadji.fr) and was featured at both the Festival Internacional de acordeões de Setúbal and the Festival Internacional de Acordeões de Algarve, both in 2018. He is a featured artist in the inaugural Brazilian Accordion Panorama Festival 2021.
