"The pianist-composer is unfurling one of the concert world’s most excitingly unpredictable careers, so of course he’s used the constraints of the past year to connect with audiences in ways he never could have just by sticking to the stage. After seven monthly sessions of talk and music from his home, he performs a made-for-streaming recital (promising “piano, electronics, video, and magnets”) from Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Hall."  New York Magazine

Virtual performance streamed from Merkin Hall
During the 2020-21 season, pianist, composer, Avery Fisher Career Grant winner and Kaufman Music Center Artist-in-Residence Conrad Tao has invited audiences into his creative practice at monthly Performance as Process livestreams. The culmination of his residency, this multi-media Ecstatic Music performance re-imagines what a piano recital can be. Tao’s work in the intimate setting of his home studio over the last nine months bursts onto the Merkin Hall stage in an immersive concert film that incorporates piano, electronics, video and magnets. A musical and visual diary documenting Tao’s work during an unusually challenging time, the program weaves together his pandemic repertoire including improvised pieces along with music by Brahms, John Adams, Jason Eckardt and more.
