Watteau’s Embarquement pour Cythere inspired Baudelaire to write the poem used by Duparc for his most ecstatic song. Debussy refers to Watteau’s masterpiece to write one of his finest piano works (L’Isle Joyeuse). Debussy, Fauré and Duparc looked back to French 18th century composers to recreate a style as colorful and sensual as that of Rameau, Couperin and Leclair. Pianist Spencer Myer joins Four Nations for an exhibit of heaven on earth as heard from two centuries.
