Kaufman Music Center's Face the Music is the country's only youth ensemble dedicated to studying and performing music by living composers.  


2017-18 Concert Schedule

New performances will be announced throughout the season.

Mon, Mar 12, 7 pm
Face the Music: Critical Mass
Roulette (509 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn)
This performance is dedicated to the biggest and boldest new works in the contemporary classical world. Face the Music Philharmonic performs the world premiere of String Vectors by John King, plus Empire Drive-In for an army of keyboardists and film by Greg Saunier, best known as the drummer and composer for Deerhoof and celebrated by Rolling Stone as part of “a generation of trailblazing 21st-century avant-rock percussionists.” King and Saunier will be present. The concert will also feature Sean Friar’s Clunker Concerto for orchestra, percussion ensemble and junk car parts. The concert will also feature quartets from the Kronos at Kaufman Program, and premieres of student-written works.

MATA's Greates Hits: Face the Music performs “Jintili” by Bolivian composer Carlos Guittiérez Quiroga.

Face the Music at Carnegie Hill Concert Series
Church of the Advent Hope (111 E. 87th St., Manhattan)
Music by Face the Music composers and string quartets.

Featuring Kala Ramnath’s quartet “Amrit" (commissioned for Kronos Quartet's "Fifty for the Future" project) with guest violinist Trina Basu, plus Reena Esmail’s string quartet “Ragamala."

Face the Music & Luna Lab at Roulette
Roulette (509 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn)
Face the Music performs the world premieres of new works by teen composers selected to participate in the second year of Luna Composition Lab, a new program for young women composers noted in The New Yorker, The New York Times, WQXR, Huffpo and MusicalAmerica. The program also includes works by established composers.

National Sawdust (80 North 6th Street., Brooklyn)
Face the Music performs the world premieres of new works by teen composers selected to participate in the second year of Luna Composition Lab. The program also includes works by established composers.

The Jazz Gallery (1160 Broadway, 5th fl., Manhattan)
Featuring music by big band leader and multiple Grammy-winner Maria Schneider and Whitney George.

Contemporaneous Presents Face the Music
With Luna Composition Lab & Presented by Contemporaneous
National Sawdust (80 North 6th St., Brooklyn)
Music by Face the Music composers, Luna Lab, and Sarah Goldfeather, performed by Face the Music and Contemporaneous.
