MATA Jr. Festival: Music by Pre-College Composers with Performances by Face the Music
Shapeshifter Lab (18 Whitwell Pl, Brooklyn)
Face the Music premieres works by the winners of the 2017 MATA Jr. Festival. Featuring premieres of works by composers 19 and under, the MATA Jr. Festival is part of a collaboration between Kaufman Music Center and MATA, an organization founded by Philip Glass that commissions music by young composers around from the globe.

Face the Music with Mantra Percussion & Pianist Conrad Tao
Roulette (509 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn)
Face the Music joins forces with Mantra Percussion and pianist/composer Conrad Tao, who has been dubbed a musician of “probing intellect and open-hearted vision” by the New York Times and “ferociously talented” by Time Out New York. Together, they will perform Sean Friar’s Clunker Concerto for orchestra, percussion ensemble and junk car parts.

Featuring music by the Grammy-winning Latin jazz pianist and composer Arturo O’Farril and saxophonist/composer Rudresh Mahanthappa, whose works hybridize progressive jazz and South Indian classical music.

Ecstatic Music Festival: Face the Music & Kronos Quartet
Merkin Concert Hall (129 W. 67th St., Manhattan)
The celebrated, Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet joins Face the Music to perform new works written for Kronos’s “Fifty for the Future” project, a string quartet commissioning, performance, education, and legacy project, plus new works by Face the Music member composers. The two ensembles will perform separately and together.

Face the Music at Roulette
Roulette (509 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn)
Face the Music Philharmonic performs the world premiere of a new piece by John King, plus music for an army of keyboardists and film by Greg Saunier, best known as the drummer and composer for Deerhoof and celebrated by Rolling Stone as part of “a generation of trailblazing 21st-century avant-rock percussionists.” King and Saunier will be present.

Face the Music performs the world premieres of new works by teen composers selected to participate in the second year of Luna Composition Lab, a new program for young women composers noted in The New Yorker, The New York Times, WQXR, Huffpo and MusicalAmerica. The program also includes works by established composers.
