Applying for 2nd Grade
PIANO
2-3 contrasting solo pieces
2 scales of choice (minor optional)
STRINGS/WINDS
2-3 contrasting solo pieces or movements of a larger work
1 scale and accompanying arpeggio
For violin only: the 1 scale should be 2 octaves, if possible.
Applying for Grades 3 and 4
PIANO (3 WORKS AND 2 SCALES/ARPEGGIOS/CHORDS)
1 polyphonic piece
1 etude
1 piece of the candidate’s own choice
2 scales (one major, one minor), and accompanying arpeggios or chords
STRINGS/WINDS (3 WORKS AND 2 SCALES/ARPEGGIOS)
1 movement from a concerto (if possible)
1 etude
1 piece of the candidate’s own choice
2 scales (one major, one minor), and accompanying arpeggios
Applying for Grades 5 - 8
PIANO (4 WORKS AND 2 SCALES/ARPEGGIOS)
1 polyphonic piece
1 etude
1 movement from a sonata or sonatina
1 piece of the candidate’s own choice
2 scales (one major, one minor), and accompanying arpeggios
STRINGS/WINDS/BRASS (4 WORKS AND 2 SCALES/ARPEGGIOS)
2 etudes/caprices
1 movement from a concerto or two movements from a sonata
1 piece of the candidate’s own choice
2 scales (one major, one minor), and accompanying arpeggios
If your child is not prepared to play this repertoire, please have him/her bring three or four pieces of his/her own choice. Pieces must be played from memory.
