Meet Maya Fortune, Violinist & Special Music School Alumna

DSC_0968_

Maya Fortune is a Special Music School alumna from the Upper West Side. As a child, Maya loved to play with her aunt’s full-size violin, which inspired her to begin studying the instrument when she was five years old.

During her time at SMS, Maya was very involved in school ensembles and music classes as well as Face the Music. She says that SMS inspired her to be more creative and to not be afraid of collaborating with the musical community around her.

In her words, “Special Music School expanded how I see music, by having Music Tech, Theory, and Senior Seminar. Teachers and students are respectful of each other; we have a tight-knit community.”

Maya will be attending McGill University in the fall, and is interested in pursuing arts administration or policy. We are very excited to see what Maya does in the future!

Please help Margaret and other Special Music School students grow by supporting the Fund for Music Education today.
