2024—25 Artist-in-Residence Meredith Monk

Kaufman Music Center’s Artists-in-Residence are pioneering composers and performers who are developing groundbreaking multidisciplinary projects as well as educational opportunities to mentor and inspire a new generation of musicians. From masterclasses to singular performances, see them on stage at Merkin Hall, in our classrooms and out in the community creating dynamic and engaging experiences for audiences and with students across our programs.

Meredith Monk is a composer, singer, director/choreographer and creator of new opera, music-theater works, films and installations. Recognized as one of the most unique and influential artists of our time, she is a pioneer in what is now called “extended vocal technique” and “interdisciplinary performance.” Monk creates works that thrive at the intersection of music and movement, image and object, light and sound, discovering and weaving together new modes of perception. Her groundbreaking exploration of the voice as an instrument expands the boundaries of musical composition, creating landscapes of sound that unearth feelings, energies and memories for which there are no words. Currently celebrating her 60th Performance Season, Monk has been hailed as one of National Public Radio’s 50 Great Voices, a “magician of the voice” and “one of America’s coolest composers.” This season, Monk and her ensemble will premiere new work and lead a series of workshops on her singular process for the Lucy Moses School community.
