Afterimages celebrates a longstanding creative partnership between Christopher Berg and Mirror Visions Ensemble, bringing together works commissioned by the ensemble over the course of their many years of friendship and collaboration. At the heart of the program is Portrait en miniature de Madame de Sévigné, a captivating musical collage drawn from the celebrated French writer’s letters. Filled with wit, warmth, friendship, gossip, observations on fashion and food, and reflections on life and death, the letters reveal a remarkable personality across the centuries. The program moves through a rich landscape of literary voices and imagined worlds. Rainer Maria Rilke’s The Unicorn brings myth and transformation to life, while Linda Pastan’s The Months traces the changing seasons. Jeffrey Greene’s The Night Gallery leads us into a mysterious museum after dark, while The Ghost of Madame de Sévigné at the Carnavalet returns us to the writer herself. Berg’s Hommage à Poulenc, a tribute to Francis Poulenc, completes this musical portrait.
