The “imagination-grabbing” and “trailblazing” (WQXR) Grammy-winning self-conducted string orchestra A Far Cry, 2023-24 Kaufman Music Center Artists-in-Residence, perform works by Ernest Bloch, plus NYC premieres by Jungyoon Wie and Errollyn Wallen.

Originating in the Baroque era, a concerto grosso is a form of orchestral music most notable for the oppositional relationship between a small group of soloists, or concertino, and the accompanying full orchestra, or ripieno. The solo instruments engage in dialogue and display virtuosic passages, while the ripieno supports and complements their performance. A Far Cry presents four genre-defining works that celebrate the concerto grosso form and highlight the dynamics that play out between players in the orchestra.

Antonio Vivaldi | Concerto Grosso in G minor, RV 156
Ernest Bloch | Concerto Grosso No. 1 for String Orchestra and Piano Obbligato, B. 59
Jungyoon Wie | A Prayer for Peace, Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra (New Commission for A Far Cry!)
Errollyn Wallen | Concerto Grosso for Piano, Violin, Double Bass and Strings

A Far Cry’s Artist Residency is generously underwritten by The Barbara Bell Cumming Charitable Trust.
