What makes American music sound “American?” For many, Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring is a prime example of the “American classical music sound,” but his biography, a Jewish homosexual from Brooklyn with Communist sympathies, seems to contradict the prairie music he composed.

Come explore the relationship between American identity and music at Spring Forward, featuring premieres by inti figgis-vizueta, Anna Roberts Gevalt, Mason Bynes, and Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate, as well as a performance of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring Suite for 13 instruments.
