PAUL PINTO  –  The Approach (2021) World Premiere

Composer, performer and multidisciplinary artist Paul Pinto teams up with the contemporary treble voice quartet Opera News calls “the Anonymous 4 of new music” for the world premiere of “The Approach” at Kaufman Music Center. Pinto’s new song cycle is a high-intensity Surrealist love story that showcases Quince Ensemble’s virtuosic experimental vocalism with tight harmonies and witty, rapid-fire text. Influenced by female choruses of 1960s soul, feminist protest anthems and feminized A.I. assistants, “The Approach” begins with four women meeting a mysterious sailor on the subway, and discovering love on their quixotic meanderings through subterranean NYC, past lives and dream worlds.

The program also includes a performance by Pinto from his project investigating "Whiteness" along with “her lover’s hand” by the “unbearably moving” (Gramophone) avant folk vocalist Annika Socolofsky. Performed by Socolofsky with Quince Ensemble, the piece references traditional murder ballads as well as songs by Woody Guthrie and Tanya Tucker.

Please note there is some explicit language in this performance that may not be suitable for young audiences.
