2026–27 What Makes It Great?

OCT 19 – TCHAIKOVSKY'S VIOLIN CONCERTO
Ft. violinist Timothy Chooi and the Manhattan School of Music Camerata Nova
The 1881 premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major got one of the most famous bad reviews in the history of Western music. Savaged as “music that stinks to the ear” in which the violin is “torn asunder” and “beaten black and blue,” the piece overcame its critics to become one of the most popular pieces ever composed and a cornerstone of the classical repertoire.

DEC 14 – SCHUBERT'S "DEATH AND THE MAIDEN" QUARTET
Ft. Terra String Quartet
Schubert’s gripping quartet is one of the most frequently performed and emotionally affecting works in the chamber music repertoire. Written during a period of illness and despair, this haunting piece pushes the string quartet to extremes of drama and power. Host Rob Kapilow shows how Schubert found his own voice and produced a fiercely original masterpiece.

FEB 22 – JOHN ADAMS'S SHAKER LOOPS
Ft. Terra String Quartet
Host Rob Kapilow takes you back to the heady days of early minimalism, when composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass were re-shaping the sound of the era. John Adams’s hugely successful 1978 piece Shaker Loops took minimalism in a vibrant new direction by making it visceral and emotionally expressive. Hear the work in Adams’s rarely-performed, original arrangement for septet!

MAR 22 – COUNT BASIE
Ft. the Manhattan School of Music Jazz Orchestra
Explore the music and extraordinary 50-year career of the leader of one of the most important big band leaders of the 20th century. Host Rob Kapilow takes you from his early days in 1930s Kansas City and Chicago at the height of the swing era to his later success into the 1980s with popular hits including “Jumpin’ at the Woodside,” “Lil’ Darlin” and “April in Paris.”

MAY 24 – JAMES TAYLOR
Ft. singer-songwriter Eugene Ruffalo, guitarist Ann Klein and more TBA
Get a fresh perspective on the legendary artist who became one of the most beloved musicians and defining voices of the 1970s singer-songwriter era with hits like “Fire and Rain” and “You’ve Got a Friend.” Host Rob Kapilow explores the six-time Grammy winner’s intimate, finely-crafted songs in the context of his enduring, influential career and troubled personal life.
