Written during a period of illness, isolation and despair, this haunting piece pushes the string quartet to extremes of drama and power as it moves between terror, resistance and moments of eerie calm. Host Rob Kapilow unravels the music and shows how Schubert’s attempt to imitate his idol Beethoven allowed him to find his own voice and produce a fiercely original masterpiece that remains one of the pillars of the chamber music canon.
